CNUE hosted its New Year’s ceremony on Thursday, January 2, at Ilji Hall with all the faculty and staff members present. In his New Year’s address, President Lee Juhan remarked, “I hope that all members of the university will work together to find solutions to the tasks we face and that our university will advance further.” During the New Year’s ceremony, The Ministry of Education Award (Choi Young-won, Manager, Maintenance Team), as well as the 2024 University Presidential Award for seven staff members (Lee Eun-pyo, Administration Office, the Graduate School of Education; Na Su-yeon, Student Team; Oh Seon-hwa, Finance Support Team; Yoo Hee-jin, the Center for Educational Innovation; Yoon Hye-joo, Academic Affairs Team; Kim Si-woo, General Affairs Team; Kang Han, Finance Team) were presented. After the ceremony, President Lee Juhan and others visited the Student Soldiers Memorial and the Korean War Memorial in Woodo-dong to pay tribute to the patriots and fallen heroes who sacrificed and devoted themselves to the country.

Four national universities of education, including CNUE (Chuncheon National University of Education, Gwangju National University of Education, Jeonju National University of Education, and Jinju National University of Education), visited the Korean Education Centre in Sydney on November 24 and the Korean Education Centre in Auckland on November 26 and signed MOUs to run programs, including joint teaching practice sessions and Korean language education mentoring programs. Through this MOU, future teachers attending the four universities of education will be participating in joint teaching practice sessions in primary schools in Australia starting in 2025. In New Zealand, programs including Korean language mentoring programs and cultural experience programs for locals, will be co-hosted. In addition, the presidents of the four universities of education visited local schools in Australia (Parramatta Public School and Western Sydney University) and the University of Auckland in New Zealand to meet faculty and staff in person and were introduced to extensive local experience and training know-how. They were particularly engaged in deep discussions on teaching methods for effectively supporting children from multicultural backgrounds, as well as various support systems provided by schools and the policies and programs that systematically support teacher training. President Lee Juhan said, “I hope this MOU will provide future teachers opportunities to engage in teaching practice overseas and strengthen their global competencies. We will continue to build cooperative networks with other universities of education and international universities and educational institutions to strengthen the global capacity of our students.”

CNUE and Kangwon National University signed an “MOU for ‘1 National University in 1 Gangwon-do’ Project” on Tuesday, November 19, at the Administration Building at Kangwon National University’s Chuncheon Campus. The MOU was signed to overcome the crisis local universities face due to the fall in the number of students and over-centralization in the metropolitan region and pursue the sustainable development of the local society through the merger of and cooperation between universities in Gangwon Province. The signing ceremony was attended by about 20 officials, including President Lee Juhan and President Jeong Jae Yeon of Kangwon National University. Through this MOU, the two universities agreed to ▲ work together to proceed with the one national university in Gangwon-do project, ▲ actively participate in discussions for having one national university in Gangwon-do, and ▲ proceed with the project by considering the opinions of various members. After signing the MOU, the two universities will embark on discussions for the merger of the universities through communication and cooperation with various stakeholders in the region, establish a training system for educational innovation in preschool, elementary, and middle school education, and for fostering local talents, and become an educational center leading the future of Gangwon Province. President Lee Juhan commented, “We have no choice but to establish a new, futuristic teacher training system to proactively respond to the social crisis of falling student population,” and added, “We will be serious and sincere in the discussions for merging the two universities.”

On Friday, November 8, CNUE participated in the “12th National University of Education Good Lesson Competition” hosted by Gyeongin National University of Education (President Kim Chang-Won) and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the National Association of National University of Education Presidents, and the Korea Federation of Teachers’ Association. Now in its 12th year, the Good Lesson Competition is held to increase future teachers’ interest in classroom teaching and strengthen their teaching skills by providing opportunities to explore lessons that bring future teachers, current teachers, and instructional specialists together. This competition was attended by some 200 participants, including 96 classroom demonstration and lesson critique participants from 12 national universities of education (10 national universities, the Korean National University of Education, and the College of Education at Jeju National University), 48 professors, educational specialists, and master teachers who served as judges, and instructors from each university. President Lee Juhan sent his regards to the CNUE participants that day, commenting, “I hope you can contemplate on the true meaning of ‘good lessons,’ better understand the classroom that reflects changes in society, and fiercely think about your own way of teaching lessons through this competition.”

The “6th National Youth A Cappella Competition” was held successfully on Saturday, November 2, at the Sukwoo Hall, Chuncheon National University of Education (CNUE). With 14 national teams and about 140 teenagers attending, this event was more of an opportunity for participants to present themselves and harmonize with each other than being a competition for competition’s sake. Along with the competitions for elementary, middle, and high school students, diverse programs were provided to encourage interactions between the participants, including the opening performance by the CNUE a cappella group “FACE” and a congratulatory performance by the professional a cappella group “NARIN,” a group song sung by all the participants and teachers, an event where participants interacted with other teams and received goods, and a photo zone event. Furthermore, the event also provided learning opportunities for participants. Mentoring and challenge programs were offered to help anyone learn to sing a cappella, thus making it more accessible. The Grand Prize for the elementary school category went to Bongdae Elementary School’s “Cantabile Amabile,” the Gold Prize went to Bongdae Elementary School’s “Cantabile Brillante,” the Silver Prize to Songhwa Elementary School’s “Songhwaeum,” the Master of Rhythm Prize to Inje Elementary School’s “Neoulgaji,” Loving Harmony Prize to Namsan Elementary School’s “Yeonbongwoori,” the Exciting Stage Prize to Dangye Elementary School’s “Mujigae,” the Sound Alchemist Prize to Sinyoung Elementary School’s “Lotto,” the Heartthrob Prize to Always Happy Local Children Center’s “Raonsing,” and the Eye-opening Prize to Incheon Seogot Elementary School’s “Voca Juniors.” The Grand Prize for the elementary school category went to Dangu Middle School’s “Lala,” the Gold Prize to The Sangsang Choir’s “The Sangsang,” and the Silver Prize went to “Maeumsori Masoaka.” Yangcheon High School’s “Leading Tone” received the Grand Prize for the high school category, and the Gold Prize went to Yangcheon High School’s “Leading Note.” In the individual category, the elementary school MVP was “Hwang Young-jin” from Incehon Seogot Elementary School, the middle school MVP was “Park Jo-han” from The Sangsang Choir, and the high school MVP was “Song Young-seok” from Yangcheon High School’s Leading Tone. The Composition and Arrangement Prize went to Bongdae Elementary School’s “Kim Seok-woo,” and the Special Jury Prize went to Dangye Elementary School’s “Kim Yeon-woo.” Cho Suni, the head of the CNUE A Cappella Education Institute (Host of the 6th National Youth A Cappella Competition) who co-hosted the competition, commented, “We will continue to work hard to bring teenagers together on the stage to create joyful and beautiful harmony. I ask everyone to join us so that the harmony we make together can be heard far and wide in the world.” President Kim Seung-ho of the Gangwon A Cappella Association added, “This is the sixth competition, and now we are seeing more participants and new teams. It is rewarding to achieve more and meet the goals of the competition. We will continue to strive to lower the barriers to arts and cultural education.” The 6th National Youth A Cappella Competition was organized by the Korea A Cappella Education Society, hosted by the CNUE A Cappella Education Institute and the Gangwon A Cappella Association, and sponsored by the Gangwon State Office of Education, Good Music Entertainment, and the Korea A Cappella Association and is the only youth a cappella competition in Korea that has been held since 2006. On Thursday, October 10, the Chuncheon National University of Education Development Fund hosted the “Lee Sung-deuk (Former President of the CNUE Alumni Association) and Jang Hui-hwa Scholarship Fund Award Ceremony” and the plaque unveiling ceremony for the “Lee Sung-deuk·Jang Hui-hwa Hall.” The “Lee Sung-deuk (Former President of the CNUE Alumni Association) and Jang Hui-hwa Scholarship” is a scholarship established with a 133 million won donation from the seven children of Lee Sung-deuk, who served as the fourth to sixth President of the CNUE Alumni Association. The scholarship is awarded to one first-year student every year, and the recipient will receive 3 million won in 2024. Annual interest fees will be provided throughout 2025 and 2053, and in 2054, the entirety of the fund will be provided to students by covering their tuition fees. This year’s recipient of the “Lee Sung-deuk (Former President of the CNUE Alumni Association) and Jang Hui-hwa Scholarship” is Song Kibbeum, a first-year student at the Department of Art Education who received 3 million won as a scholarship. The scholarship award ceremony was followed by the “Lee Sung-deuk·Jang Hui-hwa Hall” plaque unveiling ceremony held at the large meeting room at the (former) main building. The large meeting room at the Chuncheon National University of Education was newly named “Lee Sung-deuk·Jang Hui-hwa Hall” to honor their donation to the university. Lee Soo-won, the former Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, who represented the seven children and attended the scholarship award ceremony and the plaque unveiling ceremony, remarked, “I hope that the scholarship fund will be well managed so that my parent’s love for teaching can be passed on through scholarships.” President Lee Juhan replied, “We will do our very best to manage the scholarship well, remembering its significance.”

An event commemorating the 60th anniversary of the first graduating class was held at the SBS Cultural Foundation Hall on Tuesday, October 8. The event was attended by some 30 alumni from the first graduating class, the president of the alumni association, and the university president. The event began with △ a welcome speech, △ a congratulatory speech, △ an introduction of guests and participating members, △ and a photo shoot. The first graduating class has also donated 5 million won to the development fund prior to the event. Min Young-hong, the President of the CNUE Alumni Association, said, “We are proud to have an occasion to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the graduation of the first class.” President Lee Juhan added, “I sincerely congratulate you on the 60th anniversary of your graduation and ask for your continued support for the future of the university.”
